Characteristics

The black-crowned night heron has red eyes and is black-blue on the head and back. Two to three long ornamental feathers grow on the back of its head. The flight and tail feathers are gray, and the belly is dirty white. Young birds are graybrown, with large white spots scattered on the body. When they fly, they make cracked “quok, quok” calls.
Habits: The black-crowned night heron prefers to forage during twilight and nighttime. In the morning, the birds mostly hide and rest in trees.
Resident/Common; Body length: 58 cm
Birdwatching period: year round

Distribution

The black-crowned night heron often appears in small flocks in marshes, rivers, fishponds, and other aquatic environments.
